Leyla began her studies of Middle Eastern dance and Egyptian technique under the incredible master performer and instructor Cassandra of Minneapolis, Minnesota; she began performing at local venues there after several years of study. Other wonderful instructors have included Aegela, Aziza, Jillina, Dahlena, Amel Tafsout, Suhaila, Denis Enan, Yousry and Nourhan Sharif, and the Zilba's. Leyla moved to Toledo, Ohio, several years ago and has since taught at the YMCA, Northwestern State College, The Dance Clinic, The Common Space and The Collingwood Arts Center, as well as Aegela Centers for Middle Eastern Dance, Unveiled Bellydance and The Place for Dance, as well as well forming Middle Eastern dance ensemble, Leyla & Lapis Lazuli in 2004. She can be seen regularly in performance in Toledo at many parties, Arabic weddings, festivals and cultural events (including St. George's Middle Eastern American Festival, The Toledo Museum of Art, The Ann Arbor Art Festival, Old West End Festival, Queen Sancha Ball, Artomatic 419 and ArtiGras, etc.) as well as at several local Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants including The Beirut, Al Saher, Poco Piatti, The Grape Leaf, and Manos Greek Restaurant. Leyla's commitment is first and foremost, always to representing "bellydance" as what it is, a Middle Eastern folk dance with a long history of custom and culture.
